Abir Karmakar, a renowned contemporary Indian artist, explores identity, memory, and history through photo-realistic paintings of domestic interiors. He earned a BFA from Rabindra Bharati University Kolkata in 2001 and an MFA from The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 2003. Initially focused on provocative androgynous portraits, Karmakar shifted to detailed interior scenes like ‘Scent,’ capturing human remnants. Inspired by 17th-century Dutch genre painting, his compositions reveal psychological insights with everyday objects, employing voyeuristic elements and spatial illusions. Karmakar also delves into sculpture and video installations. His global exhibitions showcase his distinctive perspective and artistic prowess, captivating viewers with his exploration of two- and three-dimensional spaces.
