“Our subjects cannot get across the world unless you have the right language for the audience to understand them,”Vijay Achrekar’ art aims to please the viewer. He bases his work on the academic study of the languid, delicately, sensuous woman. His resting or gracefully stranding figures are always posing and aware of the observer’s gaze in a manner that still largely recalls 19th century salon painting.Despite him modernizing his work with dynamic gestural strokes and abstract backgrounds, his art remains precise and smooth with realistic renderings. His recent exhibition in Bangalore consisted of 10 oils on canvas of a girl in western garb, interspersed with one in a sari, and figures in bold colors, the artists ‘muse’ conveyed different messages.Married to fellow artist Sujata Achrekar, he lives and works in Mumbai.
