Wai Ming, born Hing Kwok on November 11, 1938, in Canton, South China, overcame significant hardships growing up in war-torn Hong Kong. Self-taught, he developed his art by painting what he saw, focusing on the lives of traditional Chinese fishing villages. In the 1960s, he gained recognition in Hong Kong and opened his own gallery. Moving to San Francisco in 1974, he initially faced resistance but found success with dealer Jack Swanson. His first exhibition in 1975 sold out on the opening day. Today, Wai Ming is celebrated as one of the Bay Area’s leading artists, known for his professional, socially conscious oil paintings. His work is admired and collected worldwide.
